About Mount Phousi

​The Sacred Hill
Mount Phousi (also spelled Phu Si) is a 150-meter high hill that stands at the center of the historic peninsula of Luang Prabang, where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet. Its name means "sacred mountain" in the Lao language, reflecting its spiritual significance to the local people.
​A Spiritual Journey
The hill is considered a sacred site in Luang Prabang and is home to several Buddhist shrines and temples, including Wat Chom Si at its summit. Pilgrims and visitors climb the 328 steps to reach the top, passing by Buddha statues, small shrines, and sacred caves along the way. Each structure on the hill has its own spiritual significance and story.
Panoramic Views
Mount Phousi offers the most spectacular panoramic views of Luang Prabang and the surrounding landscape. From the summit, visitors can see the entire historic town, the winding Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, and the lush mountains beyond. Wat Chom Si Temple
The golden stupa at the summit of Mount Phousi is part of Wat Chom Si temple. Built in 1804, this sacred site offers not only spiritual significance but also marks the highest point of the hill with its distinctive golden spire visible from throughout Luang Prabang.
